Here's a question for y'all. Tire width versus frame width.

Can I fit a 26x3 tire on a 26x2 1/4" rim in a 37 elgin Oriole? I have space on the seat stays but the chain stays are right at 3".

I’d say no. You need a bit of space between the chain and seat stays to accommodate wheel flex. At least 1/8” per side. Even then you might rub the frame in turns.

My math says 3" - 3" = 0" and that's if the rim is dead true with no load. So I too would say no.

Just spread the frame a little wider- not hard to do if you are careful. BUT you've modified the frame if originality is important to you.
