I thought I would post a few pictures of a 1963 Schwinn Typhoon that I've been working on for a little while now. First off, I know the Typhoon is not rare by any means and also isn't very collectable, as far as it's value goes. But, I received this bike in pieces as a present from my Aunt. She picked it up from someone in New Jersey, who she believes might have been the original owner. The bike had been sitting in the same spot of this guys garage for decades, she bought the bike from him, disassembled it herself, boxed up the various pieces and shipped them out to me in California. I've been sitting on the project for a little while now, always saying I'm gonna get around to putting that thing together, years end up going by and I finally got going and made some considerable progress. What you see in the pictures is where I'm at now. Hoping I can get some assistance with finding the proper seat, pedals and grips. I have the original pedals, but the spindles are terribly bent. Not sure what happened to the seat or the stock grips.... A few things I changed, and hopefully don't get too beat up on here about them: I put on an early StingRay gooseneck cause I thought it looked a lot nicer, also I used an old Varsity front hub when I laced up the stock rims with new spokes. I have the original gooseneck and front hub, plus the original Westwind tires, but they all look pretty rough, I'll keep them with the original pedals. With the serial number being L319228, I believe the bike to having been built on November 5th 1963. Does that make this bike a 1964 model? Any help from you guys on the last three remaining parts I need, more information on the bike, or anything else that might be of interest? I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks for saving this. Your aunt is now a part of your new family legacy. The CABE members get to hear this positive story.

Welcome. I’m a Typhoon fan and have one the same colour. I bought it as a frame with a bent fork over 15 years ago on ebay. USA made Schwinn bikes were never sold in Australia so I had to import it. It has been changed so many times over the years, I named it Lazarus!

Do whatever you want to it and enjoy it. I’m 6’2 with a bad neck and back and set mine up so I’m comfortable riding it. They ride great and being a Chicago built Schwinn it will last forever.

Hey Ozzie, that's a really sharp looking bike! Pretty cool the way you've got it set-up, and appears that it's in great shape. Thanks for nice comments on mine, once I find a seat it's all done.

Alright, thanks so much for your reply, super cool that you guys are all so complimentary on my little project. And yes on the chrome fork crown, plus added the chrome seat post clamp. Just thought they looked a little nicer, without detracting from whatever value this old bike might have. They're both Schwinn parts, so I've tried to stay OEM Schwinn as much as possible. Even the chain is NOS Schwinn .... But unfortunately the tires are some knock off EBay items, so far that's all I've found. I'm on the search for a seat, hopefully something nice will turn up.
Hey Ratso, I read you are looking for a seat for your Typhoon - I have this old Made in England seat (Brooks?) that I am not using. It is stamped Made in England and A 62. I see no other ID markings on it. Its black vinyl. Its 9" long and 8" wide. Its quite comfortable. It was on a 1957 Hornet that I have. It has one small split in the trim right on the nose of the seat. I'll be happy to ship it to you if you want it N/C...let me know any time - Perry in NH USA

Wow, that's super generous, really appreciate the offer! I've been trying to track down a red Schwinn S seat, but everything I see on EBay looks like junk. So maybe I can run this black seat instead. Just curious how it will look on the red Typhoon? I'll shoot you a message soon, thanks again.

Anytime - if you want it - its yours...it'll hold you over until you can find a nice red S seat...!
