Love to to see each Model D from earliest to the latest dissembled side by side. Then dated by production run. So we could compare and see what’s correct for our application by the year. I’ve made the mistake of thinking they look similar, and tried swapping parts. They were most definitely not the same!
When you swapped parts did everything go together nicely then fail in use and did it happen immediately? Or was it clear when trying to assemble it that something wasn’t compatible?

So on the model D hubs.... I've had the same issue. The newer ones have different cones and a different bearing cover on the cog itself. It seems like the depth of the bearing changes. The actual hub shell is the same, the cogs are the same, brake arms change a bit but still are interchangeable. The main thing is the bearing cone on the drive side and that screw on bearing retainer.

On assembly I could tell. Someone posted recently about this with a pic of the hub shells themself. One type had more hub shell extending past the spoke attachment rib. With that, obviously the gizzards are different too. 😜

Good to know. I’ve rebuilt several without issue but those were overhauls right from the wheel. I have a couple to build from parts so I’ll now know what to look for. This is all very helpful info. Thanks guys👊🏻

I like to re-use the thicker (0.06”?) bronze discs with 3 small holes, from the Model-C hubs (which used 6 of them), mated with the thinner (0.04”?) steel discs, available as new old stock.

That way 7 bronze discs may fit; one less than with the NOS 17-disc sets, but one more than the original Model-C hubs.
