I came across King Sting literature with specifications that state it had the Dia-Compe BMX-1000.
Is it the same brake as on the Cruiser model?
Is the BMX-1000 the same as the MX1000?

Yes. BMX are original and MX are the reissue. Exact same product without the vintage price tag. Made in Taiwan I believe. It appears at this point from the discussion that they are going to be too short for your frame though.

The 1000 or 1080 or both will be too short?

Just from the observations offered by @koolbikes it would seem the 1080 is the correct brake but you’ll notice a small gap below the pad suggesting the 1080 is slightly longer than necessary.

It may be possible to just barely get the 1000 to reach with careful placement of the rear wheel so long as you have appropriate chain tension. Too tough to determine at this point.

Honestly if you’re not married to this particular frame and really want to do a tribute bike then find yourself a Schwinn middle weight canti frame that was made for caliper brakes and save yourself the trouble. They are easy to come by and not expensive. Plus you’d have a legit American made Chicago built Schwinn.

Someone had to say it. I love the enthusiasm. Just can't get onboard with the starting point here.

I appreciate the advice, but it's NOS, my first frame, the year means something to me, and I'm building a BMX bike that's sorta a restomod (in car terms) and not intended to be period correct. I totally understand if there's no interest in getting involved.

Is either the 26" Black Ops DW1.1 26" wheelset or the SE Racing 26" wheelset a compatible and good choice?

Any of these frames can be built up to look cool, work well and be fun to ride. How you go about it is entirely your decision and there’s no one here to satisfy other than yourself.

You started the thread with the concept of a tribute bike! That would be commendable if done correctly. We were trying to help you determine how to achieve that vision.

Now it’s a restomod. Also cool and done and showcased here often and frankly, my preference when it comes to BMX inspired projects. If you have a connection to the frame being an 1985 product then I understand so go for it.

It seems you’re well on your way to making purchases and starting your build. Have fun and post photos when you get it to the track.

Cheers

The SE wheel set is a good product. Here they are on my tribute bike.
