I went to a Auction this am and there was a Pierce Shaft drive up for auction.I waited around hoping/dreaming that it could be a player .The bidding started at 2500 .I was out..Tom
Picked the bike up last week, wiped off the dust and hand rubbed the nickel parts.
At some point before 1923 (as that's when the mansion it was located in was last inhabited) the original owner swapped out the pedals, possibly the grips, and the saddle which is made by VIM out of Buffalo where the bike was made and found less than an hour from.
I found period rat traps, but leaving the rest as is and hopefully down the road can find another white Fisk button tread singletube to match the rear.
Serial number 74K and with the unshackled fork either a 1903 or 1904.
This is really a fine example and better than this model in the Smithsonian holdings.

I'm proud of you, scrubbinrims. A prize like this is well earned. When it comes to bikes like this, always be prepared to pay up or go home, especially today. These aren't $500 bicycles anymore.
I'm curious, you said the mansion this was found in was left abandoned in 1923? Almost 100 years ago?! Can you PLEASE post some pictures of that house and the rest of the stuff in it? My curiosity is off the wall right now.
