SUBJECT: 100% Original 1895/1896 Columbia Model 40 Men's Bicycle – 25" Tall Frame
Hello everyone, I am looking for information, a fair valuation, and potentially the right buyer for a highly authentic piece of cycling history. I own a 100% original, untouched Columbia Model 40 men's safety bicycle, manufactured by the Pope Mfg. Co. Here are the specific details and technical markings of the bike:
  • Frame Size: Rare 25" tall frame (measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube).
  • Head Badge Inscriptions: Fully intact and reads: "Columbia. Model 40. Pope mfg co." - Patent Dates (Left Side): PATENTED DEC.6.87. MAR.10.91. and OCT.10.94. - Patent Dates (Right Side): NOV.10.94. PATENTS APPLIED FOR. MADE IN U.S.A.
  • Condition & Patina: The bicycle is in "as-found", uncleaned, and unrestored condition. The black enamel paint is flaking in some areas with a nice layer of honest surface rust/patina. The seat post is currently frozen in the seat tube due to age, and I have refrained from forcing it to prevent any damage.
  • Original Components: The bike appears to be completely original down to the last detail. It features the original leather-wrapped/laced wooden grips, original handlebars, original leather saddle, and the highly desirable original wooden rims (wood looks straight and solid).
I am firmly convinced that this bicycle should be preserved rather than restored, as its original survivor status is incredible. Since I am not a dedicated antique bicycle collector, I would like to get in touch with members of the community who could help me estimate its current market value or express interest in purchasing it for their collection. This exceptional find deserves a proper home! I am located in Quebec, Canada, and can provide high-resolution pictures of the head badge, rims, grips, and full frame upon request. Local pickup is preferred, but I am willing to ship at buyer's expense via BikeFlights or other if I don’t have access to BikeFlights at home.
Thank you for your expertise and help!
