When I was in college, I did my grocery runs using my 1974 Raleigh Sports 3 speed. I used the saddle bag and my backpack to move the groceries. I also used to occasionally pick up lunch at a burger place, which also would go in the saddle bag. Had to watch out for neighborhood dogs giving chase if I had a hot lunch in the saddlebag.
