Cruisin' on my Bluebird
Here's a sweet 1896 ladies Dayton manufactured by the Davis Sewing Machine Company of Dayton, Ohio. This beautiful lady features all original maroon paint and nickel throughout. The paint on the fork has some loss due to the smoothness of the underlying nickel. This bicycle will benefit greatly from a cleaning and polish as I have done neither. The wooden fender and chain guard are both in outstanding condition. The original nickel on this bicycle is great and will shine up if that is what you want. That said, there are a few areas where the nickel has peeled away, including the adjustable stem, bars, bell, and a couple of other spots. Speaking of the original adjustable stem and bars, these were an accessory that established Dayton as a premium brand. The front brake mechanism appears to be missing, although the catalog cover shows this model without one.
The wheels are in nice shape and spin fairly true. The tires, made of closed-cell urethane foam, were manufactured by my father in the 90s as a replacement for difficult-to-source single-tube pneumatic tires. They are lightweight, rideable, and will never go flat. Both hubs are clean and feature oiler ports, and the spokes are soldered at the junctions. The original chain adjusters are present. The crank and chainring show beautifully with nice original nickel. The original matching Grothe pedals are straight and spin freely. The block chain is clean and free-moving but could use some lubrication. The cork grips are in nice shape and complete with all metal ferrules intact. The leather saddle is soft and clean and in nice shape. The bell appears to have been with the bike since the beginning. It is a very early bell that rings loud and clear courtesy of a small spring-loaded hammer (see picture 14). The serial number is 8892.
Here's your opportunity to grab an attractive, iconic, rideable, hassle-free TOC bicycle at a solid price. Simply pick it up (or reassemble it upon receipt if shipping) and ride it down the road. $1750 plus $125 shipping in the US or local pickup in Newburyport, MA. Payment via PayPal family and friends is preferred.
Please review pictures closely and message me if interested or with questions.
