Finally riding a big boys bike
Hi All,

I bought this bike today and I can’t seem to find anything online about it. The owner said it was a 1951 Express Neurmarkt Bavarian bike. It has all original everything, just needs new tires. I can’t seem to find much about this company online except that they made motorcycles and bicycles and I’m wondering if someone could help. Saddle is a Wittkop leather with springs in great shape… and the fender ornament and bell are in phenomenal condition too.

Trying to find more information on this and the value too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Judd

Nice looking bike! What are the stickers on the back fender? The rear hub may have a date or a date code on it. The "smoked" darts at the head tube were a thing in the early 1950s as the post war economic miracle kicked in. It looks like it will clean up nicely. It's an interesting bike, but not a valuable one. Express made quality, stylish bikes, but they are heavy, diamond frame one speeds. Grease it up and ride the heck out of it. New pads for the front brake "stempel bremse" can be found on eBay with a little digging. The bottom bracket looks like it could be a glockenlager, which is a German oddity that has to be taken apart with a hammer and a soft punch. look on youtube. Try flushing it out through the grease zerk. Is there a knob on the right side of the head tube? There is some information on Express bikes at altesrad.net . It's in German, but google translate will get you close enough. Deepl.com does a much better job of machine translation if you find anything really interesting. And a lot of Express literature at:

@Andrew Gorman

This is phenomenal information. Thank you so much. I’m only a $125 into it - I really just like the look of it and all the little details it had on it. I’ll check out the sources you provided tonight. Here are some other photos I took tonight… hopefully that helps with your questions: I think I covered them.

Thank you again!! I was planning on removing the tape someone added and giving it polish and then trying to find tires for it. I’ve never had a 28” x 1.7 x 1.5 tired bike before. Time to start learning! ☺️

Have fun with it! Your tubes have Dunlop/Woods valves- for some reasons they stayed popular in Germany and the Netherlands. You can inflate them with a Presta pump.
Thank you for that. I was trying to figure that out. If I need to replace them, do you have any recommendations to replace them?

I'd just patch what you have if necessary. If you need new ones, dunlop valve tubes are still available on eBay, Amazon and AliExpress.Schrader valve tubes will fit but don't have that extra hint of weirdness.

Express Werke mudguard mascot .jpb.jpeg

a concise company history found online -

"Express was the brand of Express Werke AG, a German bicycle, motorcycle and automobile manufacturer. Located in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz. they trace bicycle manufacturing back to 1884, claiming to be the first European mainland bicycle manufacturer. Automobiles were produced from 1899-1910, with scooters being added in the 1930s. Production of small displacement motorcycles commended in 1949.

In the late 1950s, the decline of the German bicycle led to several mergers. In 1958 Express merged by Victoria from nearby Nurnberg (Nuremberg). The running dog on the crest and chain guard was a Victoria symbol, so this may date the bicycle to no older to 1958. In 1959 the Neumarkt factory closed, so the combined Neumarkt Nurnberg mentions on the seat tube may define 1958-1959.

Both firms were swallowed by Hercules, which was part of Zwierad-Union, eventually became part of the Sachs corporation. Apparently the Express brand continued in use until the 1980s and the original factory partially survives as bicycle museum."
