minor update -

have looked at a number of Rochet cycles from this era at the three francophone fora for vintage cycles where am a member

have yet to find one which exhibits this seat stay treatment or this lug pattern

there is always the possibility that the subject cycle is something which was produced only one year and in only small numbers...

...or else done as a bespoke

Thank you for this update.

I took the stem off and there is an imprint that reads “Vitus” stamped on it.

I am not sure when Ateliers de la Rive first started using the "Vitus" brand name or when it was first being used as stamped on your steerer tube; possibly by the mid to late 40s, but certainly by the early to mid 50s.

edit: My only bike with Vitus tubing has a late 70s early 80s 979 (alloy frame like ALAN) frame so no help to you there; and I think my 30s French bikes (Baggi, Automoto) would not have Vitus used as a tubing brand name yet (I've not seen any markings on them to indicate otherwise).

extra edit: sorry I thought the image was the steerer tube but you mention it as being the stem.

Gene’s personal bike bought from his nephew .
Badge holes are approx 44 mm apart.
I’ve seen approximately 10 Rochets and this is the only track model I have ever seen.
Remember that many of the parts were changed ( stem ,etc) as he set it up for his personal use.

Can't help with the ID I'm afraid, but that is a beautiful bike. It should clean up very nicely.

On a side note: those Lyotard 'Berthet' pedals are nice as well. Even though the design is now a hundred years old it is still competetive. They have been produced well into the 1980's and decent examples can still be found for reasonable prices.

I am currently sporting them on several touring bikes, as they work well with many types of shoes:

one simple thing you could do to slightly advance the inquiry would be to look at the face of the cycle's Verot fixed cup

we know the shell to be of metric dimension but we do not know if it be CH or FR threaded on its fixed side

it can be seen that it is octagonal

the two possibilities are that its face is smooth, without markings or that its face expresses one ring

a face without marking indicates a CH thread and a face with one ring indicates a FR thread

Couldn't agree more re. the pedals!

Attached is a pic of the Sutherlands page on bottom bracket markings....hard to tell from the pics, but it seems the drive side cup is 8-sided with one groove...if so, Sutherlands says it is French-threaded.
