Wanted: 1891 Moffat Bicycle and Catalog

No comments? A frame like this looks similar to that Miami.
I did a big ride today just to gather myself a bit. Nobody was out as usual. Lots to think about and not really fun for me. The ride was great. You think you are freaking out? You cannot imagine. Too many coincidences, too many signs. Almost too much to absorb....I'll follow up later. I was on my knees today twice.
I have a good playlist I ride with. Stuff that makes me think. It was a rough one today. So here you all go.........................................

I have done some research into the Moffat Cycle Company phenomena. They were the first startup USA safety bicycle company to achieve popular success. The company began in January of 1891 and was declared bankrupt in August of 1892. The bankruptcy was manufactured by the company treasurer. The company only made bicycles.

It took some time for the company to produce bicycles. But when it did the bicycles won cycling club racing events and the publicity, in 1891, created an overwhelming demand for the small company.

I think that it is unlikely that the Moffat Cycle Company ever had time to produce a catalogue. Catalogues were used for promotion to bicycle dealers or agents and the Moffat Cycle Company did not need to promote itself with a catalogue. The bicycle agents were banging on the Moffat Cycle door to get their product. In the short time that the company produced bicycles, I doubt that there was any time to produce a catalogue.

Moffat was ahead of its time with these frame designs. In business for just over a year -a flash in the pan. Thanks for sharing the catalog pages!

Wow. That is an amazing catalogue.

Here are two news clips about these Moffat bicycles from The Wheel and Cycle Trade Review.

From August 28, 1891. George Moffat was a member of the Illinois Cycle Club. He obviously sold a few bicycles to other club members. From that race, news of the Moffat wheel spread through Chicago cycling clubs and the bicycle trade press, so much so that bicycle agents from other cities wanted to sell the Moffat bicycle.

This is from October 16, 1891. I believe that it refers to the "Racer" model in the catalogue.

Here are the race results:

The Bicycling World and L.A.W. Bulletin was a publication from Boston, Mass.

The racers with Tire used = Infl. Cushion are the Moffat bicycles. George Moffat designed the tires for the Moffat bicycle. Later the tire design was patented by George Moffat.
