Finally riding a big boys bike
Here's a fine example of a Compax Paratrooper. At least what was found of it. Not sure about the saddle, but the rest of what you see seems original to the bike. Alignment looks fine and in general a very solid frame. I discovered it in a recent dusty barn pile with the frame sections detached. I cleaned it up and installed the missing coupler pin as the photos show. Also fashioned a reinforcement for the front fender fork mount. One of the rear fender braces is broken. The headset feels good.

Hi @bicibob

That looks nice and clean, and is all of the difficult to find parts, just the common bits missing (-:

K192201 was made late August/early September 1946.

This one was made a month or so before yours, missing the standard MaCauley chainguard, and wrong saddle but shows a complete one otherwise.

Good Luck with the sale.

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for the info! I thought of building it up.... but I have too many bikes. Are the hubs ND? Any idea what saddle might have been OG?
Cheers, Bob

Hi Bob @bicibob

Early that year there was a mix of Musselman and Morrow hubs, but by the time yours was made they seem to have only been using ND D from surviving examples.

This modified compax is a couple of months earlier than yours, but the white painted chainguard is a feature at this date. It is the correct model for yours, and yours is likely to have been painted white too.

The saddle base is the same as yours, Messinger I think, but there’s been a lot changed on the bike, so it’s difficult to say if it’s original.

This one is closer in date to yours, (but note it's a lightweight version, yours is a heavyweight). White chainguard, and I think a Persons saddle.

I hope that helps,

Best regards, Adrian.

Adrian,
I'll likely build it up if it doesn't sell as is. I'm curious about how badly it rides!
Ride On!
Bob
