Well DUH!!! How dumb am I (please don't answer that)!! Without looking closely, and without glasses on originally, it's a new setup! That's the cartridge sticking out further, blocking the threads for the original cup. Maybe put in when the new rear derailleur went on. All is inside the BB!
It spins beautifully, but it's still missing a cover. At least I placed a ring on it for looks. For now, this will be fine. 🙂

No judgements here, I'm in the same boat, I always want to put a lockring on too since the original setup had it. I was helping this guy out at the local bike shop just last week, replaced an unsealed BB with lockring with a sealed BB cartridge. When I went to dig the old lockring out of the garbage the guy didn't exactly slap my hand, but he was like "what are you doing? Sealed cartridge BBs bottom out against the bearing on that side and do not require the lockring." Then I thought about all of the ones that I've seen without exposed cup threads, recessed into the BB shell. He was the shop owner, so I didn't question it any further....

I was trying to help you out back in post #7 by alerting you to the modified "Cartridge" bottom bracket that was added.

They do not use the additional "original keyed" locking ring. In fact, the splined ring shown in your pictures "is the locking ring", for the cartridge. You do not need two locking rings on one side.

The additional exposed threads on the new "right and left" cartridge rings allow you to have a small amount of adjustment in your chainwheel chain alignment. Just use a straight edge to check (or adjust) the alignment and then snug up the right and the left rings against the cartridge, then your done without any adjustments on the sealed bearings. Since you have both right hand and left-hand bottom bracket threads you only need one splined tool to do this job.

You have 1990's parts, on a 1970's bicycle, no big deal, happens all the time.

@Schwinn Sales West Thanks, John. I wasn't paying close enough attention to what you said, apparently. But now that you've really spelled it out, I thank you.😀

Though I have a lot of Road Bikes, I've never encountered this type of cartridge before. It's from the 90's, but still new to me. Crazy that I haven't encountered one prior to this! 🤪

Pretty much done. Not a crazy detailing like usual, but enough to make it look nice. Also, it will need a new rear brake cable along with new handlebar tape (I just patched it up to make it look decent for now). Brooks seat is pliable, but is fine for no, but should probably be replaced. 🙂

The bike shifts fine and rides smoothly, but the next owner, should they choose to, can replace the rear derailleur and bottom bracket to make it original.
