On Training Wheels
Well I have done a thing. I am 54 and I was originally looking for a 1970 Continental that would fit my Yeti-sized body. I could never really find one. You see I wanted to do some sort of an epic ride here in Minnesota that was done on said bike. Historical or Hysterical you choose. Well I gave up my search and found a 1973 Varsity with Fenders. Upon bringing the lovely yellow bike back my son and son-in-law fell in love with the classic styling and American Made quality from yesteryear. So my search re-engaged to find a bike for my son-in-law's early birthday present. Well we couldn't just stop there as we got another for my son. So the picture below is the three of us with our bikes. We are going to take them apart down to the frames and restore them to working level and do a rise starting in Grand Portage Minnesota and go at least 73 miles, maybe more along Lake Superior with our wives being our support vehicle. The coolest thing to me in all of this is how excited these two young men are and I "get" to be along for the ride/experience. Truly a gift.

So with all that said please share suggestions, places to get bar tape and Schwinn secrets if there are any.

Welcome to the Cabe @Shutterbug

Your plan sounds like fun and doing it with family makes it even better. You can easily upgrade your Varsity to the Continental level or even higher if there was anything on the Conti that you preferred over the Varsity. Even the name decal! 😂I'll make one suggestion for now, when you buy tubes don't buy the cheap thin Taiwan tubes that don't hold air for more than a few days. As far as bar tape, bike swaps are usually a good place with reasonable prices and then there's eBay where the prices can get ridiculous. You can also post a wanted ad here in the classified section. I have a box with various colors and I think I have the Chestnut but no yellow or opaque blue/green/red. Have fun!

Try Bicyclebones on EBay for almost all your parts. Do yourself a favor and buy good tires, tubes, and brake pads. . You’ll be glad you did.
Put lots of shake down miles on the bikes before going on your epic adventure to work out any bugs. New chains might be considered.

What would you charge for the Chestnut?

Great info. What are some of your favorite tubes to run that are good quality. I have Kenda tires coming!

Unfortunately I’d recommend you return the Kendas. I have used numerous Kendas over the years but stopped using them when an almost new pair had a sidewall blowout. Fortunately I was only going about 10 mph. About two minutes before on a steep downhill I probably hit 30 mph. Had it failed then it would have been bad. I ride Gatorskins now. Don’t skimp on tires. One trip to the emergency room will more than offset the more expensive tires.

The Yellow Varsity "does not fit you". It's a 26" extra tall frame size. You might be able to ride a 24" framed Varsity/Continental. Note, the wheel size is still 27" on all of the full-sized Varsity models.

#2, You have to lower the handlebar stem to at least the Maximium Height Mark for your safety. You have the stem raised into the threaded portion of the fork which is very weak.

Have fun on your ride.
