Annual Santa Cruz Woodies on the Wharf Bike Ride 2023!
I wish I would have known about this, as id've went....... As for the bridge......... Watched my wallet fall out of my shorts while walking my bike across in the mid 80's and dissapear into the deep!
I went to that Woodie show 5 or 6 years in a row but seem to have missed it that last couple times. ... I always took a bike so I would not have to park far away and walk. they have (or had) bike parking on the wharf.
This was a last minute thrown together ride. Literally a few days prior. The bicycle parking sucks. They have a valet area where you're parked with about 100 other regular bikes. So we parked off to the side and luckily a few other guys on the ride stayed back from goong to the show and guarded the bikes for us. All in all a great day. Oh and note to self.... and others... wear sunscreen. We are all beat red today.
A couple from Sacramento was also at this ride. Thanks Chris @slick for the invite and Gary @PlasticNerd for hosting. Special thanks to Gary Quail for letting my wife and I ride two of his bikes for the day. All around great day with beautiful weather, riding vintage bicycles, seeing classic cars, eating good food and just having fun amongst friends.
My wife checking out Quinn's @Fonseca927 '47 Woodie. My buddy John @Livmojoe waving on the upper deck.
Gary's '41 Mead Ranger (tall frame)
What a treat for me to ride Gary's green '46 Schwinn. What a smoother rider she is. My wife rode his '51 Hornet, a bike that we had owned for many years. Both bikes still have their beautiful original original paint.
I grew up on Beach Hill which is right above the boardwalk. When I was a kid and we still had rail service. We would climb in an area under the bridge directly below the tracks. It was pretty sketchy, loud, and the totally vibrated to high heck.
Bummer! Just missed the jam. my flight back to MA left 6/20…. I was out visiting my family in San Jose and Santa Cruz was my go to surf spot along with Capitola back in the late 70’s early 80’s before I moved to New England. Looks like an awesome time was had!
