I picked up an Italian made set of oddball tires a while back, they have the same vertical rib on them. I haven't found a way of dating that vertical rib yet either. Great tires and hard to find anything old to fit Schwinn S4 rims AND in 26 x 1-1/2 x 1-3/4! Same deal with no recommended tire pressure though.

Schwinn middleweights were on the streets in the summer of 1954. The tires on those were tornadoes. Since that tire has the pie marking, let’s assume that tire was made in the third quarter of 1961. Let’s also assume good year and continental are using the same dating method.

I was wondering if it was the same code, seems likely. I'm still amazed at the condition of these. Are Continental tires know as a quality tire? I'm assuming so as they have been around a long time. I forgot to send pics to Continental so I did this morning hopefully they get back to me with a confirmation on the date.

Hopefully they will get back to you with a positive answer. The continental has been and still is a premium tire. They’ve been around for a long time.

@GTs58 they just responded from Continental and said they no longer have the records of the tires or when they were produced. He said they believe they were from the end of the '60s but was not sure. He also claimed the size 26 x 2 x13/4 correspond to current tires ETRTO 54-571 (650x50c) any idea what tires that would be?

When I was looking for information I came across all their tires that are currently made. They do have a line of mountain bike tires and I think that name is one that I came across. If you like knobby tires it might be worth checking them out. I guess the only way to actually date those tires would be by looking up old advertisements that are dated. I do think the dating system is the same as a good year though.

When I see it written as 650 x 50c (c after the width), it may as well be slang...I hate this just the same as 26x2x1-3/4 or 26x1-1/2x1-3/4. 650B is the tire spec they are borrowing from, an older French spec road tire outer diameter, that really tells you nothing about the rim that it fits in its entire description.

Her is an example of that size tire on eBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3751598509...d=link&campid=5335809022&toolid=20001&mkevt=1 Great looking tire that I would love to fit on an S7, but the diameter is too large to fit an S7. The only way I know it doesn't fit is after searching for new tires that fit S7 rims with a BSD/ISO/ETRTO of 571mm and finding only tires that are too narrow(23mm) that appear to be made to fit those French road bike rims. The only modern made rubber I've found that fits the S7 are the repro brick treads... 🫤 I want higher pressures!
The 650 tire sizes are hot right now for mountain bikes(27.5") and gravel bikes(650b), those sizes also corelate to some older 28" beaded touring bike tires, they all have the same BSD/ISO/ETRTO of 584mm....that also happens to be the same as an S4.

650c tires are what actually share the same diameter rim as the S7.

Confused yet?

Continental really does make a great tire, but...The only 571mm tires they currently offer are 23mm wide.

Very muddy waters in terms of how these tires are advertised! Be certain that any Modern tire you need to fit an S7 rim reads 571mm in it's description. Sorry, end of rant. Lol

I appreciate the info. I like the new retro bricks at least they are 45 lbs not like the 30lbs balloon tires. Imagine a later 40's balloon bike with 25 lbs and a huge bag of newspapers on your back riding up hill? I'm tired just thinking aboiut it.
