As an vintage tube guitar amplifier guy, I've become accustomed to keeping old parts like capacitors, speakers, etc. when they're replaced as they will make the amplifier worth more when sold if the original parts with them ... and they're nice for the legacy of the amp.

I took a 64 Deluxe American I just bought into a local bike shop to have the bearings gone over, chain replaced, etc.... I asked them to save all the parts for me. They didn't. When I tried to explain why I wanted to keep the parts and why they might be relevant if I ever sell the bike in the future when I picked up the bike, the owner went into a-hole mode, got defensive and told me I didn't know what I was talking about, the parts didn't matter, etc. .... Again, I don't necessarily think the parts have that high of a dollar value to them, if any, but they're nice to have for the legacy of the bike .... imo.

Do you care about saving front wheel bearings, chains, bottom brackets, headsets, etc. when you are replace the old ones??

schwinns are different because they have a schwinn script on the bearings. They pretty much had their own product. I do keep all the old parts. I have replaced newer parts with the originals from bikes i've picked up because they fit better. The value wouldn't be much of a difference a few dollars maybe but if its rideable then I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes...I do kept them. Because you can use the same technique with any part that can be replaced if needed.

Yes, I save everything but step through frames and I have a couple of vintage parts cabinets to help keep it organized.
I never want to use new parts period and if you save stuff, even small stuff, you just replace old with old and avoid the a-holes.

I've even kept bars from damaged frames and used them to repair other frames! saved an otherwise ruined Super Streamline frame that way! :D

Just last night I saved a totally crapped out seat post collar with the stripped out nut and bolt from a Cosmic Flyer, so the next owner of the bike will know what to look for if he wants to replace them with correct parts.

I got buckets, cans, boxes and bins full of just about every part that I raped off of every parts bike that I ever had.

My basement is like Auschwitz for worthless crappy trash find bikes.

They are worth more in parts than they are complete.

Old bearings? Good Lord, you guys would just cry if you saw the things I've sent to the crusher. The bearings I replace are typically junk. They're spun and/or rusted out. I'm about to scrap a decent Columbia fender now actually and a set of single speed Huffy Dragster wheels. Now don't cry, I try to sell what I don't need and I sell it cheap. Gotta make room!

Just pitch it if you don't need it!

why don't you try not buying so much stuff that you have to throw away stuff that other guys could use??
I'm still having trouble getting over you cutting the bike in half!
