I agree with everything that was said in previous replies......but even mildly worn ball bearings can sometimes also produce a growling noise.....I got away from white lithium grease a long time ago......I like NAPAs medium duty grease for about everything....especially on older mildly worn parts......
 
Your not going to get away from the growl, they are straight cut gears and are going to make noise.
I've also noticed the gears cutting into the driver. I've set up my grinder in a lathe to cut a 1* bevel the length of the tooth. It helps a little but you cant get away from the straight gears.
 
I have enjoyed working on the yellow band and the red band and I feel like I have a good sense of what they are and what can be expected from them. My serious advice is to switch to a single speed ND and relax and enjoy the ride.
