Your thesis might be flawed. Bike mechanics back in the day were a pretty proud bunch. They didn't believe in letting mistakes out the door. Just imagine what your coworkers in the wheel shop would have said about you if you were the only guy in the shop to build a bass-ackwards wheel. They'd probably accuse you of having a flask of whiskey in your lunch box. Incorrect spokes getting out the door would be kinda like shipping a lightweight front tire on a WASP. It would stick out like a sore thumb.

Agreed, we would have re-laced the wheel, it would have never gone out of the shop like that.
