I just took a look in the Idaho CL there is nothing. Now I see the issue with my suggestion. Put it out there in the wanted section and maybe someone will come through. There is a complete 5 speed for sale here he wants $400 I tried to get it for $250 he would not bite. If it is still there in a month or so I'll go at him again.

Haha--you beat me to what my reply would have been. Idaho's not really a great place to look for most niche stuff on Craig's.
I've convinced myself to join the local bicycle co-op workshop, but I'm holding off until I feel like I know which way I want to go with this project--functionality, or whole hog. Following a couple of leads right now, one in each category, and talking it over with Brett (husband). Once we decide that we'll join the Boise Bicycle Project, where I hear there's a guy who loves vintage bikes who would likely be up for giving us some in person, hands-and-eyes-on-the-bike advice.

Thanks to everyone willing to give their thoughts here and be a resource and offer resource ideas and stuff. It's helping me sort things out!

keep that drag brake...they're the best, never get wet, never overheat, the asbestos linings never wear out...and i ride at 30mph....i only wish i had an expander on the front.

Wow, Lots of information, and some of it is actually correct. Here's what you have, and what you need to replace.

You need a 26 x 1 3/4" S-7 chrome Schwinn rim. They come "stock" in 36 spoke hole, NOT 48. You want to use a .080" standard nipple size, or a .105" heavy duty spoke size. Either rim can easily be drilled for the .105 heavy duty spokes that were used on your wheel. Try to carefully disassemble the wheel, do not round off the soft brass nipples, use a correct sized spoke wrench.

The absolute best advice you have already been given is to remove the freewheel from the hub (with a proper remover) BEFORE you remove the spokes from the rim. I repeat, remove the freewheel with the proper remover "before" you remove the spokes.

You have a Union Brand rear drum brake hub, and it does look different than the more common Atom rear drum brake hubs. They will both work fine for this project, just clean and lube the moving parts. It would be a good idea to sand with crocus cloth both the brake shoes and the rust off of the inside of the drum for better braking.

I have no idea what your wheel building experience is, so I "will pass" on giving any advice. If you have a buddy with wheel building experience, maybe ask for his help. Just make sure you note the spoke cross pattern number "Before" you take the wheel apart.

Good luck with your project.

They nick named them Speed Attenuators' because they work well a scrubbing off speed, but seldom stop. The best thing about a drum or disk hub brake is that they do not put the braking friction heat into the rim/tire.
