Schwinn never made, or had any intention of making a single speed KLUNKER. You are just interpreting the statement wrong. All that statement says is that the took the existing model Spitfire, made a 5 speed out of it, and introduced it as the KLUNKER 5. The Spitfire was an existing model in 77 & 78.

Just read the statement without the text in parentheses: A 5 speed ballon model "KLUNKER 5" is added, and the Spitfire is restyled as a "KLUNKER"
That is your interpretation Lobsterman

YES it is. And my interpretation is based on deductive reasoning, and my actual first had experience working at a Schwinn dealer during that point in time!

If Schwinn had planned on introducing a single speed KLUNKER, they would have done it at the same time they released the KLUNKER 5 since the only difference would have been the screen on the chain guard for the single speed model...........!

Here's a February 1980 Cruiser Deluxe I just picked up! It's a real Honey with straight unrusted heavy duty wheels. Pretty chuffed to find one that hasn't been beat to death! I haven't put the rack back on yet as I am putting fenders on it first.

This is the best I can come up with, once adding fenders (wald 962). The rack supports come up short and I had to add extentions. You wont see this mess once the panniers are on.

As the old saying goes: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Personally, I can't understand how some people can take a beautiful bike like you have, then put those crappy looking fenders on it?

It rains plenty here in Charleston. Haven't found any nice schwinn fenders Iand mc Cauley is out of business. All my bikes have fenders from my Paramount on down. I open to suggestions for good fenders.

Unfortunately there is no real good solution for fenders to fit the 80's Cruisers! Schwinn even discontinued the fenders they were using back in the day because of the fitment issue.

There is a recent thread about it here: https://thecabe.com/forum/threads/1980s-cruiser-fenders-wtf.231790/
