Good afternoon from the cold north! Sadly bike season is closed for anything but maintenance or cleaning at the moment in this part of Canada but as always I keep looking to see what’s for sale near me that might be a good purchase (for project or to ride and just enjoy) So this bike recently presented itself for sale and I’m curious to know what it is I’m looking at, it’s a Schwinn (dx?) and I’m guessing early to mid fifties? I know seat and tires aren’t original and it has at some point been restored by someone. Seller can’t see the serial number as it’s under paint and the spoke reflectors were added by the previous owner
Seller is asking $350 cdn dollars and to me seems a little high but maybe it’s not? I’m unable to determine the year and or if there’s anything else glaring that I’m missing…..? So I ask for your opinion and input , as collectively you have never steered me wrong and have always provided great advice and insight
I look forward to hearing from you
Cheers

The bike is completely missing the rear fender brace, the chain guard wasn't made for that frame and has a bracket rigged on in the back. Something is severely off with the shape of the truss rods, not original. Couple that with the fact that the fork is bent back almost to where the fender interferes with the frame, and even when you do straighten the fork, those rods won't fit or will be bunched up if you straighten with them on the fork. The seller may think he put $350 worth of effort into making the bike look better, but when I see a bike with fresh paint over a fork bent that bad, I turn around, walk the other way, and don't look back. If theres body filler in the serial number or just that much paint build up, I'll do the same, walk away.

I noticed those truss rod too. Do you think they could be for a ballooner Jaguar? @AS-1 says those are about 1/2" longer than standard, if memory serves. Then again, they may be home made.

This bike is a ballooner as well though and the rods aren't even sitting in fender dimples like the Jaguar(original model, no Mark designation). Not only is the width off, but the arc length and diameter aren't the same as a standard schwinn. Click back and compare to the original DX example pictured below it with patina.

Thank you! These types of observations are appreciated more than you can imagine
I enjoy learning from all of the experience this group has to offer
cheers

Absolutely wonderful advice and observation. I saw that he actually sold the bike once then took it back on trade against another bike (shows original sale was $550) now it’s $350 ! And it is clear from the feedback that it’s not worth the effort ! Thank you again so much for pointing out concerns
Cheers
