Look Ma, No Hands!
I recently picked up this photo of employees of the March-Davis Cycle Mfg. Co. of Chicago...I was struggling to find information on the company to make sure it was American before I pulled the trigger...when I came across this 2016 thread...TheCabe member Barracuda provided a lot of background...Speaking of background...Much of the value of antique photos is knowing the who/what/why history of the image...A lot of times a photo will have nothing to go on, on the front...I luv it when I flip it over and there is period hand written details...but the two signs in this photo say it all..."Makers of The March Bicycles"....without those signs you got a dime a dozen factory workers photo....with the signs you got everything...
The company had some drama...News clippings in the 2016 thread supplied that August R. March had his partner Walter Davis arrested and charged with fraud...later Davis countered with a suit...They are probably in this photo...I would speculate that may be them sitting side-by-side, first row directly above the rear tire...the one on the left looks cross...I'm slowly learning about early American bicycle manufacturing history....this was a nice little piece of it...
