One more observation if I may. I understand that the early version of this component was constructed of brass for the model A and C, and presumably for the model B applications, but was eventually replaced with hardened spring steel sometime during the model D production. The brass , having greater malleability and lubricacty did the job but was a failure point for the hubs longevity was it not?
The springs worked slightly differently with other different parts.
In the early designs, the spring was fixed (keyed) to the clutch rotation-wise, and friction was in between the clutch and the hub shell.
For the later model, the spring was also fixed (keyed) to the clutch rotation-wise, but friction was in between the clutch and non-rotating parts.
