I thought about that and if there is no reserve, what difference does it make who put the last bid in? The consignor is getting more than they would have otherwise.
I guess it's an ethical thing for me. Auction houses are contracted to bring the best possible outcome for the consignor, not for themselves. There is actually a code of ethics auction houses are to use to help govern and guide them in this direction. This is my opinion only though, I speak for no one else. We could dance around the ethics of it all, but for me, if I see an auction house do this, I don't frequent their sales.
 
Years ago auction houses would bid you against "the book" to tell the top bidder they had not met reserve. Now they seem to just stop when there are no longer two people throwing out competitive bids. When an auction house "buys in" sometimes they loose, its a gamble. Christie's is in a lot of debt owning art it thought it was buying cheap that tanked further. One last note, 15% commission/buyers premium is very low, most I see are now 27% which is putting me off buying big time.
