I recently sold a nice pair of the wide G&J steel clinchers I had in hand, then another pair fell just recently into my lap. This set is came in much nicer shape with a lot of paint still there and no rim damage/dents on original low-mile hubs, the rear with 4/5 busted spokes and the front with none. They must have sat for some time, and were on an old Great Western moto.
Question regarding width and offset design of this pair. The 1st set I worked on was beat and I noticed the folded rim edge was inconsistent, weaving in and out around the rim and I wasn't sure where the bead was supposed to be, making for difficult truing. The rims were also wide, around 1-1/4 to 1-3/8" with widely offset spoke holes. This narrower (1-1/8") set I straight away noticed the offset rim because the rim was undamaged to begin with. Spokes were more centered in the middle of the rim on this set. See the two photos below. taken in the same spot from either side. Notice one side of the folded lip protrudes an 1/8" at least beyond the upper surface of the rim. The other side is even with it. This would effectively offset the bead seat by 1/8" further to one side than the other, spokes remaining centered....any idea what is going on here? Both rims are made this way and very obvious. Have others noticed this offset?
