I absolutely love these G&J rims on my 1901 Rambler. They are solid wood and seem quite rigid - a lot thicker than the normal tube tire rims.
Since there is no metal clad to withstand the sideways forces of thed clincher tire, it is a good thing they designed them that solid.
I guess the doubel-bead profile of the G&J was supposed to devide the forces acting upon the shoulder (?).

Too bad the Rubenas only have one bead ;)

Anyways, I could mount the Rubenas without any modification - although I helped a little bit with a plastic tire mountig aid and (in some areas) silicon spray to press the bead snug into the rim profile before inflating the tube.
So overall a very nice experience.

In terms of the color missmatch:
I assume the rear rim is original (black with thin golden stripes, like catalog states) and the front one is a replacement - still G&J, same shape etc. - but there are no traces of black on the front rim.

So in case somebody wants to sell / trade ... please let me know ....

I recently bought a 09 iver with the g&j metal rims. I’m having the same problem as jollyride had. The rims are 25 3/4 wide. I had a pair of 635 tires and will not come close. If they were just rubber bead I think I’d try to force them more but with metal strands I believe there’s not enough cheating room to risk it. I don’t think the rubena tires will work being 28x1.5 too would be the 635 tires. The next available tires size is 642 available in Australia and fleebay for around $155 shipped with tubes. I do believe these will work perfectly No white only gum wall or black. Ride on!

I should post the size to gargle 37-642🍻
I have the Vee Rubber 37-642 on my 1916 Pierce. Put them on in 2016 and they are starting to check badly but I've also ridden at least 1000 miles on them. Since covid and retirement I've been riding 3 mornings a week for at least 12 miles and genenrally riding 5-6 days a week. I have an extra set I bought from Australia a few years ago for backup but would like to try the Rubena.

The Vee Rubber tires are a real fight to put on the G&J steel clincher rims. First time took about 5 hours of struggle. Last tire I mounted involved a couple of snapped tire irons, sitting them in a hot car and spraying with windex to work them onto the rim. I have not heard any complaints about problems mounting the Rubenas.

They are a touch small and I'm wondering if all the cracking is due to the rubber being stretched, they started cracking all ovver within a few months of mounting. This may be due to them being stored in the bike shop for many years or maybe just poorly manufactured? Maybe just bad luck that I got these two? One of my first ones did blow out the sidewall a few years after mounting.
On Mondays ride I got a flat in the rear tire, first one in about 5 years. So it's time to wrestle the old ones off an dinstall the new one unless I can find a set of Rubenas somewhere in Europe...

This photo was taken April 2017 when I had just received them from Moruya Bike shop in New South Wales.

These were taken July 19th, 2023 after 6 years on the rims.

Its like Christmas in August!

I've got some Rubenas now for my Pierce and I was wondering what tubes people have found work well? I've been using presta valve 700C tubes and have not drilled out the Gormully and Jeffry valve opening for Schrader valves. I'm thinking some tough 29r tubes for these new Rubenas.

In this day and age, we today continue to use all these confusing-to-most dimensions regarding rims and tires and it is simply mind boggling to me to begin with that we have not gotten rid of the meaningless numbers when it comes to fitting tires. It is ridiculous that we can't simply use the BSD (Beat Seat Diameter) Width, Weight and be done with it. Why do we even mention ERD or "effective rim diameter" or "tire size" when looking for tires that fit the rim? The ERD is for calculating spoke length for rims, nothing to do with tires.. Or how about befuddling everyone even more by saying 28" is actually 29 or 700c? STOP right there folks! 29"/700c is 622 BSD!!! Why not simply use the Bead Seat Diameter? Why is a middleweight tire/rim a "26"" tire with a different BSD than the standard 26" wheel/tire with a BSD of 559? And you wonder why it's confusing? Crazy man.....just nuts...

What is the metric size of the Rubena 28" x 1-1/2" tires that fit the all-steel clincher rims?

I measured a rim and the outside diameter appears about 25" even (or 635mm); so it seems that one would need a Bead Seat Diameter smaller than 635mm, and that 635mm and 642mm tires would both be too big, (like Steve suggested on page 8). I could be measuring short?
Are Rubenas a wider 1-1/2" version of 630mm tires that normally come in 1-1/4" widths; (and the extra width also increases the height from 27" to 28")?

While browsing for something else - these came up:

I ordered two pairs

and here they are:

In WHITE :) - the kind which seemed to be extinct ...
Since they werent available for well over two years I imagined that red or brown or black ones might arrive ... but they are the real deal, light creme/beige :)
I didn't talk to the seller (German Bike Shop) but I'm guessing it is old stock.

Here ist the link

unfortunalty only 6 more are left :(

Yes, they have been a available from Classic Cycles in Germany for a few months now.
We have all ordered our lifetime supplies, hence the reason, there maybe only six pairs left?

🤪
