Here are stampings on the frame and hub. They are a bit difficult to make out. Serial number looks like only three digits; 518? Interesting compared to the other posted above with 5 digits . Did they start over each at 1 each year? Maybe an early 42?

It would be interesting to know the serial numbers of the 1942 Elgins produced under the first restriction period after Pearl Harbor (47 pound limit). Maybe that is when they started to exclude certain parts. Also it would be interesting to know how many were actually produced as civilian bikes during 1942 or if numbers were much lower that year in total.

If you read what it says on the 1942 ad posted here, Sears like Schwinn were following self imposed limits. Certain parts were not used at the very beginning of the 1942 production. Tanks, springers etc..
