I pulled a Gripper off of a '70 Stingray 3-speed and found a Westwind stashed inside! Has anyone heard of storing a tire within a tire for future use? The Gripper has a white stripe and the front tire is a Superior with a white stripe. I got this bike knowing it had rotted tires and found replacements before I got the bike. The stashed tire is in better shape than the replacement I got...thank you whoever thought of stashing a tire within a tire back in the day

I live for the CABE
I guess it takes up a little less space and would be a good way to keep your date coded tires together....but typically when I see a tire in a tire, it's because the outside tire has a cord failing or a good size puncture that was letting the tube herniate.

My thought was that a Schwinn bike shop replaced both the original tires with the white stripers and the front tire was in good enough shape to hang on to...I wonder if the original owner even knew about it

A friend of mine did that because of the cracking on the gripper, he didn’t want to ride original tire and have a blowout and this was an easy fix as he had LOTS of used westwinds

Just a note he didn’t do it on THIS a specific tire…but it was something done by collectors to make a tire rideable

I have had questionable tires in the past and used an old inner tube....[split open very carefully].....to line the bad tire and then put the tube in and put it all back together.....Also a heavy duty tube can be of help........

Wore out three sets of tires already!
I've seen it done on demolition derby cars to try and keep the tires up.
I'd say this was done for either trying to avoid a flat or a questionable cracking tire they wanted to use/show
