On Training Wheels
My wife has an old Shelby Flyer. The serial starts with an X and 5 numbers. I read that X indicates year 1935, is this correct?
Rims are 26 inch and completely rusted through. Where would I find replacements rims for this bike? I have lots of questions being a new member.
What size tube and tires for this bike? Bike needs restoration, rust all over but only surface rust, seems like a solid frame. Thank You for any help.

Still hard to read the serial. A little WD-40 and elbow grease will help clear that up. The Shock Ease fork was introduced in 1941 if I remember correctly. The stem was used on either side of WWII as far as I know. The brake arm looks like the longer version of New Departure which fits that same range and rules out 1935. The grips make me want to lean more towards 1941.

A cleaned up picture of the serial will help confirm, as parts can always be replaced.
I'll have to look and see if I have a patinaed set of rims with the same brake...

X5937?, thanks. Early 40's. 42-early 45? ~More examples needed to pin it down.~ Highest "X" 4-number so far, may be 5th digit lightly stamped?

Before going further with it, please search paint restoration here on this site. There are tricks and tips KEY to bringing this bikes' paint back without damaging it that you should be able to do yourself. For now, dis-assemble it and clean the metal parts/bearings in mineral spirits. You might carefully use WD40 and fine steel wool to see if paint color returns...do it carefully in a less visible spot to see how it reacts. You may be surprised how the paint color comes back. It may even be a candidate for a WoodBleach bath.. Dig through this great site for tips on how to move forward and get parts as well....everyone here will help you, welcome to TheCabe..

1941. One year only frame.... used on the Safe-T-Bike usually but.. they were on low end bikes also like this one.
