The cable won't break. It's not like a gear or brake cable... more like a cable from a come-along, maybe 1/4" diameter.
I could see from the photo that it was a heavy duty cable; but IF it ever did break then what would happen? I am just curious if the frame could hold reasonably well. Essentially, is that cable required to hold the frame together or not? Does the flex joint provide enough support on its own to ride the bike without the cable ("limp home mode")?

I see what you mean. I just don't have any information or experience with the design. Hm. Might be an excuse to do a finite element analysis after proper investigation of the dogbone, the specs of the tubing and the assembly, and the other intricacies of the frame.

Or, I could just enjoy it just the way it is?

I read somewhere that the dog bone material is the same thing G.M. used for Corvette rear springs.

I certainly would not test a good example unless I happened to have a spare for that intended purpose. I see that the spring tension can be adjusted. Curious as to how that adjustment level is determined. Reading that these bikes were used in the mtb form impresses me with their design and durability.

Good question.

1. The cable will not break.
2.The cable is necessary and goes to a spring which acts kind of like a damper. Different spring weights were available to tune the ride.

Yes, this is a cool frame/fork. I could see it set up very much differently, but you don't see those often. I really liked the soft/twisty ride the MTB version I rode had that sported a RS Mag21. I never saw any cable/spring failures on them during their run.

Their website doesn't look like it's on life support. They list a dogbone for 99.00 USD
