I Suppose in all forms of racing or competition nothing stays the same. It progresses, it evolves yet the constant is always the goal, the win! Today is just a snapshot of where a particular sport or competition is at this moment in time. Do I miss the brute strength and single-mindedness in competition of the past? … Sure, but I also appreciate the constant evolution of a particular discipline and look forward to what's next. I used to race sailboats professionally and did so for most of my life. And even I will admit watching a sailboat race is like watching paint dry. However what you don't see is the constant thought and motion of a crew trying to squeeze every ounce of speed or tactical advantage out of the boat as the race progresses. It's nonstop intensity during the entire race, there is no rest. I view road racing the same, there are so many things constantly going on to try to gain an advantage. There is beauty in that but also hard to see from a spectator standpoint.

I look forward to the future of cycling and wonder what we will see in the years to come.

Very good observations above. For me, this stage race in France has quickly changed in focus because of materials technology, nutrition, training and support to the point of predictability as every team structures around it. It seems much more scripted so that in order to win you hire/employ one or two full-blast teams to try to blow everyone up and eliminate most if not all front to back except when way in front (yellow). Too many crashes and penalties in the sprints left a bad taste for me, but the Green Jersey win by B. Girmay was certainly something to be proud about. The usa has zero coverage, shame on dumb dumb America...
