Unabomber Bike ID

Ted Kaczynski, aka “Unabomber” was a domestic terrorist. He was a math prodigy with a 167 IQ and entered Harvard at age 16. He became a full professor then flipped his lid and shunned society. He moved to a remote cabin in Montana with no electricity or water. He lived there 20 yrs and sent mail bombs to people he considered “enemies of society”. Between ‘78 and ‘95 he killed 3 people and injured 23. He died in prison in ‘23.
This is his bike. Even though he was an evil monster, I have to admit he had a cool bike. A classic klunker/rat rod. Can anyone ID this frame?

In around 2021 a movie called Ted K came out. This is the bike they made up for the movie. I think more than a few cabe members could have done a better job. DX frame instead of cantilever…meh! There was also a Netflix about the Unabomber.

Now you've got me looking for more photos of these bikes.
Unfortunately, the movie bike is more identifiable to me than the red bike. It looks like a late 70s setup with that cast fork crown. The curved eyelet-less rear dropouts are distinct, but I'm not sure of the maker. Ross, Rollfast...? The handlebars definitely aren't factory. There seems to be another lightweight bike in the background missing a wheel, then a wheel inside his cabin, ha.

Movie bike has chain adjusters so I think it’s probably older than Unabomber bike.

An interesting fact about the Unabomber was that he hand carved the igniting components ( the bomb "trips") from wood and had the authorities chasing their tails for years because they could never find any conclusive evidence!

The FBI couldn’t find who he was in nearly 20 yrs of searching. His brother recognized his writing style in his manifesto the newspapers published and turned him in.

Do you think he was really evil or was he just suffering from some kind of delusions? Whatever his motives were, it doesn't look like he was after personal gain.

He sure was committed, I'll say that. Living in a shack in the middle of nowhere, like it was the 1800's. Crazy, but interesting fellow. I'm going to read what I can about him. Had a nice looking wood stove in his shack. Also, I hear they found out some more things about that D B Cooper that jumped outta that airliner with all that cash. Crazy world we live in.

It’s the wrong frame geometry, but I have a bike with a really good base for a tribute build (although that feels like the wrong word in this case). I bought it for the carrier, and the seat. Ironically, the seat that it’s replacing looks like the one on Ted’s bike.
