Cruisin' on my Bluebird
@cyclingday will like this...
I finally got the bugs worked out of the 3x1 drivetrain
Along the way, I learned you can't use sealed-bearing, high-engagement BMX freewheels with the 3x1 drivetrain - the rigid freewheels hopped the chain whenever I needed mash.
Final solution here was Shimano MX-30 freewheels, with loose roller bearings, and enough angular freeplay to adjust to the variable chainline.
I replaced my IRD Alpina triple FD with an older Shimano 600 TriColor FD, which I have older 6200 (Arabesque) and 6300 versions working fine on two other triple drivetrains.
I was getting about one over-shift off the outside chainring on each ride - the Alpina triple FD worked perfectly 90% of the time, but the other 10%, it would cock a chain link and drive it off the chainring.
'88 Shimano 600 (Ultegra) FD6401 had all the travel I need, perfect penny clearance between cage and large chainring teeth, can't physically overshift, and the chain doesn't rub the cage at the two extreme shifts.
I also increased my big chainring to 46T, and here's my final gear chart
18t row are greenway gears
flip-side 16t row are my road gears.
