‘48 Schwinn: mechanically refurbishing a crusty D37XE Ladies…

Earlier in the week, I massaged and straightened out a couple of small dents and gave her a little more age. And just last night I found a non working horn unit just to fill the hole. I say now she’s looks complete. What you do think?

After finishing up this crusty Schwinn ladies, the only thing missing was a DX tank. Just browsing on one of the bicycle groups on FB, I see this one picture showing a portion of a tank. I find out our friend Quinn @Fonseca927 was the seller, so contacted him directly. “What color was the tank originally?” I asked. “It’s maroon,” Quinn said. Oooh….and same color as my wife’s Rusty bike. I’ll take it I told Quinn in addition to more items Quinn was selling. Thanks to Quinn and another friend/CABEr, @Jose 711, I was able to pick up the box of goodies from Jose’s place after the Marin Museum swap meet last weekend. Ended up spending a few hours with Jose and his gal. We had fun. Thanks Jose.

Love your story and patience for giving this Ol’ girl some lovin’! I still have my first collection bike I purchased from a local antique dealer, a ‘34 girls Elgin. The seller had lots of stuff outside, year round….in sun, rain and snow. Took her home and gave her some much needed lovin.

Thanks @Intense One. I think it was more for me then her; I had fun getting Rusty back on the road again after just sitting for decades. Would love to see what you did on the '34 girls Elgin.

This is funny. So we went to the market during our lunch hour today. While riding on our way home, I asked my wife, “So do you see anything different about Rusty?” Again still riding, she’s looking down on the bike. “Nope,” she said. I started laughing. I mentioned it to a friend last night, and he called it. He said something like “if it’s rusty, she won’t even know.” How true was that. When we got back home, I had her look again. "It's the tank. That's the difference." I told her. It's more me than her wanting to get the old bike more correct. Tank or no tank, I'm just glad she enjoys riding her Rusty bike.

Thanks @Intense One. I think it was more for me then her; I had fun getting Rusty back on the road again after just sitting for decades. Would love to see what you did on the '34 girls Elgin.

Here’s a pic of my Elgin. I had to cut off the tires because they were flat and rock hard. I painted the rims with white paint for metal and installed a repop chrome tank. I replaced some of the macrame skirt guard. Everything stayed the same including the chain, which I had to de-rust and get the links to rotate smoothly. She’s a rider!
