I live for the CABE
A friend referred me to a local lady that had her late father’s 1949 Raleigh Sports she wanted to find a worthy home for. It is the rarer 23” frame size so better to fit my 6’ frame.
I went over today to see it and fell hard, as I do for all bikes of British heritage.
We talked for quite a while. Her father was a professor at Yale and rode it to his classes. The photograph is dated 1950 on the back, so this is what it looked like new. Fast forward 76 years later and this is what we have. A true barn find, covered with dirt, spider webs, all manner of corrosion and grime, but I’ve refurbed worse, so she gave it to me on the condition when I get it rideable, that we meet so she can take a spin.
She also rode it in its better days so has fond memories with it.
I have a decent pair of Raleigh Record 26x1 3/8” tires and just bought a properly weathered Brooks B66 off eBay so now the work begins for a proper refurb!
Always love to find bikes with family stories!
The first photo is as i saw it in her barn. The second one is the bike as new chained outside her father’s classroom at Yale.
The rest are just some quick snaps I took doing a very a quick assessment.
I’ll try to get better pics later, but wanted to jettison the basket and alloy rack ASAP to see this classic lines. The headlight was a surprise. She found it in a box this morning along with the 1950 snap.
Pretty chuffed, mates! I live in Charlotte NC, so finding a vintage Raleigh like this is pretty rare!

That will clean up nice. Those pedals are rebuildable, and will look and work great once cleaned up. Did you get the keys for the locking fork?

Great fall project. Keep us posted.

Didn’t have a locking fork. Was that only on Supurbe’s?
Pedals are all torn down and ready for cleaning, repacking and putting back together.
I’ve always like rebuilding pedals-basic bike grunge work, but gotta be done, so might as well enjoy it!

I have a Sports with a locking fork, so, no, not just Superbe. Oddly enough, my Sports has the key lock fork, full chain case, caliper brakes, and most unusual of all, a 1953 AM medium range hub.

I’m going to ride it, later. I’ll post a photo.

1953 Raleigh Sports Tourist. Note locking fork, AM hub, brass faced shifter, full chain case, old style caliper brakes on Westwood rims. Old, German ding-dong bell. An unusual old Raleigh. For what it is worth, the precision evident in either an AM or, an FM hub was about the high point for Sturmey Archer, and these two hub designs are smoother than anything else, in my experience. The alloy versions do occasionally break a flange, but, I haven’t had any issues on mine. I’m not a path racer, so they live pretty easy under me.

This bike has never done Lake Pepin, but, the bag has been on multiple bikes that have.

Ted

Correct. The locking fork and some of these upgrades do not necessarily indicate a full Superbe. Upgraded Sports models certainly were available above the basic model but below the Superbe.

The 1949 Raleigh in the original post is a somewhat upgraded Sports Tourist Model 23. The original rear rack was a paint matched Raleigh Industries with clubbed legs, for the 26-inch wheel Sports and Dawn models. It appears in the old photo of the bike.

A full Superbe Sports Tourist Model 24 would be Raleigh Green, with mudflap, dynohub lighting with dry battery unit, bag, and likely an AG or FG rear hub.
