Alright!
Reggie is still looking good!
I used to see him around town, when he lived in Newport Beach, Ca.
He was always a good sport as we’d wave to him as he drove by in one of his many outstanding cars.
Thanks for the insight into his other passions.
I had no idea, he had an interest in classic bicycles.
Looks like his taste in bikes matches his excellence in all his other exploits.
Not sure why it should be a surprise that Reggie Jackson has had interest in vintage bicycles (although I am somewhat surprised about the number of Krates shown... and the Monarks– both equipped with repop Persons saddles). Reggie was often seen at my friend "Doc" Gibson's bicycle swap meets in Costa Mesa, California in the early 1980s. I have 35mm print photos I took of Reggie there many years ago.

I also often saw Reggie at one of my fave night spots in Newport Beach (where he could sometimes be seen seated between two blondes). The place was called "Bobby McGee's." They had a restaurant and night club with dancing there (sunken dance floor). It was just down Pacific Coast Highway from my Newport Beach place in those days. It was packed on weekends and Wednesday nights. Cars would be lined up on PCH waiting to get in to the valet parking. It was THE place to meet ladies!

As for autographs, Reggie may be signing them freely these days, but whoa be it to anyone approaching him back in the day. A lady who asked for an autograph one night at Bobby McGee's got an abrupt vociferous refusal and lengthy lecture about respecting privacy (which begged the question, why go out to a very public nightclub if one wanted to be private?).

Anyway, Reggie was more interested in Whizzers and cars back in the day. I used to see him all the time at Bobby McGee's and at car meets. But that was a long time ago...

Doc Gibson. That was the name I have been trying to recall, even asked in a post on here a year or more on here about a So Cal swap put on by a a person called Doc something but go no responses. Here in Nor Cal there was a Ron (Doc) Geisert from Stockton who has since passed away, he was a veterinarian. Big Schwinn especially Stingray guy. Doc was a big fellow and would always have a Manta Ray seat on his Stingray bikes when he rode them around at the meets. I used to drive down from San Jose to that meet, great bike swap. I remember once at a Doc Gibson meet ( feels good finally remembering the name Doc Gibson), anyway the night before most meets I would meet up with some of the local bike guys, and we would go out for drinks the night before a meet. Some of the times we would close down a place and just head back to the swap site for a hour or two sleep before the meet. This onr time though I was dead tired so I went back to the motel I was staying in near the swap, did not get up until about 10, raced to the meet. Now it was tough to get into the swap as it was in full swing, so parked in a lot next to meet or somewhere close. Someone saw me and came over, then another. Next thing I know there is quite a few people that had come over from the meet as some knew I was supposed to be there, and I am selling out of my van in this lot. After about 15 minutes or so there must be a dozen or more people around my van in this lot, and Doc Gibson comes over. Never knew hime exceppt when I would do the meet, pay him for the spot, and maybe have a small conversation. Well anyway Doc says what the ***** heck am I doing, I already had the swap spot money in my pocket, I just reached in my pocket, gave him the money, explained what happened, he nodded and went back to the meet. His bike swaps, and Dave at Anaheim Schwinn were some of my favorite and the few bike swaps I would travel down to So Cal for, besides the big Pomona Auto swaps, and sometimes the Long Beach bike shows. Good times, and thanks for bringing up the name Doc Gibson. As I get older I forget a lot more than I ever knew, LOL. Yea, and I did not know Reggie back in the day but he could not have been more of a gentleman and polite when I was there Thursday. But I do remember when the Swinging A's came to town when I was about 12 or so with their white shoes, long hair mustaches, went to many a game at the Coliseum even World Series games, but was more of a Giants fan. Even recall a game where they either won the series or the AL pennant where everyone jumped out on the field to celebrate. Everyone was tearing up the turf to take home with them, I was on my knees trying to dig up home plate, must have been set in concrete. I did bring home some turf and planted it in the rear yard.

Oh, and as I am on here posting I want to say that I know my posts might be long and even repeat themselves in some spots even in the same post, just part of getting old maybe. But I had someone yesterday at the Galt swap meet tell me he reads my posts here on the Cabe and they are to long and I could say in a sentence or two what I took paragraphs to say. I just told him that if it bothers him so much, just don't read it. I think he saw how at the swap at 6 in the morning how a lot of people I knew were bringing me bike stuff to my swap spot to ask me what they had, and in a few cases yesterday to sell them to me. When you treat people well that is what happens, in my opinion anyway. So here is another long post, and yes could have just said Doc Gibson that is the name I have been trying to remember. But I can not tell you the number of times I have a read a post on here and a big smile comes across my face as something clicks and I recall a story about selling out of the back of my van as I slept in the day of a swap. If anyone does not care for these long posts that I know really do not say much, just don't read them, simple.

"Doc" Gibson was David Gibson, chiropractor. He was a very good friend for many years and used to come visit and call often. We used to go to car swap meets together (often in his motorhome) when I was not selling. I brought the very first old bicycles to sell and display to Pomona– back when that event was first starting. I was even listed on the early flyers they handed out. Dave saw that and was blown away.

I gave him the idea of having bicycle meets at his office in Costa Mesa. He had a number of celebrity clients including John Wayne. We used to eat sometimes at Pilar Wayne's (Duke's wife) restaurant in Corona Del Mar. Since Doc's Costa Mesa parking lot was empty most of the weekend, it turned out to be a good money maker for Doc. AND with the added benefit that the stuff came to him instead of needing to go look for it. I even pasted up and scribbled out flyers for him to hand out. I saved samples of each– no matter how primitive.

Sadly, Dave passed away several months ago in Michigan, where he and his wife were living in recent years. I miss him.

Sorry to hear about his passing. I did not know him except for perhaps a small chat at the meets. I did not go to many of his swaps because of the distance and I having to work week-ends back then. Smiling again as this thread reminded of Dave ( I am horrible with names, ask anyone who calls me, takes me a minute to get the name to the person), but pretty sure it was Dave who owned Anaheim Schwinn, forget the last name who owned Anaheim Schwinn and the swaps he put on in the Anaheim Schwinn Parking lot, and what happened one time there. There were some big east coast bike guys coming to one particular meet and spoke with them on the phone during the week to maybe meet up night before show. I I dealt with these guys for quite some time but never met in person. We met in the Anaheim Schwinn parking lot at around 10 PM night before the meet along with some Nor Cal and So Cal collectors, some of them had just had dinner together. We all went out to a bar in Stanton for drinks that I would always go to before this show, and we closed down the place at 2AM. I said I did not have a motel and was going back to the swap parking lot to get set up. Some followed me back to the lot, others came not long after that, we set up, and by 3 AM the swap was going. Now Dave the owner of Anaheim Schwinn was the nicest guy in the world who I would speak with on the phone to a few times each year, especially when it got time to be close to his once a year annual meets, and we would always have a good chat at his meets. But his store was in a kind of strip mall where they did not want overnight parking or anything going on in the wee hours of the morning. And Dave did not want anyone getting there before 5, maybe 6 in the morning. So here Dave gets there on this occasion and finds the meet underway when he arrived with tables, booths, bikes and parts all out, he was not to happy about that, but being the nice guy he was shook it off within a few minutes.
I know what you are saying about stuff coming to you. I put on a few bike swaps. I told sellers that I got first dibs on anything they had. Kind of kidding when I said that, and would ask everyone if they had anything I might be interested when they first got there. I am always grateful when to this day once in a while I will have people bring stuff to me when I get to the swaps early in the morning, and others telling me about a great bike or something like that which just came in the gates. That only happens very little these days but always grateful when it does happen. Now I have to unload my van from the Galt mett which was yesterday, had a good day so it won't be to bad but is the least favorite thing about this hobby. Getting older so I might still be going to the swaps, but maybe not selling at as many. Like to thank everyone if they happen to read this that see me pull in and give me a hand with all my unloading and loading of my van when I hit the swaps. Yesterday it was JFJ1978 who is kind of new to the hobby and is on here, and John from Sacto Area that were a huge help as soon as I got there in helping me get set up. Thanks so much guys, and everyone else who help me out through the day with bathroom breaks and other tasks at my spot.

Oh man, I would have let the kid sign whatever wherever his instincts told him to! This story made my night. Who would have thought Mr October is a bike guy too? I have a cereal box card signed by Reggie somewhere I’m going to have to dig up now. Happy for you both to have such a great time. Thank you for sharing.
yeah Id have let him sign the seat too!

AWESOME DAY WITH A REAL LEGEND!! Sounds like a great guy! Similar story, I got to work on Bruce Springsteen's bikes a few times at his home after I sold him, his wife and his sister some bikes.. pic is when we first met at the shop.. The BOSS is as cool as they come.. I didnt recognize him at first, so after he test rode bikes for 2 hours and went to pay.. I said "hey Bruce, whats your last name?'.. He laughed.. and said 'uhuh.. Springsteen', I fell over.. We all laughed... photobombed by Stan who is equally as famous as Bruce in these parts..

photo removed after someone I dont know wanted to know which person I was. I had to remove the pic. Sorry. Security first. I wasnt going to post a pic because I like anonymity.. and within 10 minutes someone I dont know is asking me which person I am.. I was a bodyguard for a decade.. I worked as a bodyguard for Trump, neutral opinion, im not for or against anyone.. Just I had a high profile job. thats a red flag.. To the guy wanting to ID me.. please post a pic of yourself and id yourself.. in the mean time. pic is coming down. good lord the internet is weird
