I just picked up this rear rack for my Columbia. I was wondering if you think it would be safe to soak this in Evaporust or if it would harm the paint?

The bottom side looks like a candy paint. If it is, I definitely wouldn't soak it. It really doesn't look like it needs a soak. WD-40 and grey scotch brite or 0000 steel wool.

Hey dannuus would you have any pictures of any painted parts you soaked?

I've said my piece about this earlier. Evaporust is too good. There will be tiny bits of rust under your paint, maybe even too small to see, and Evaporust will eventually find all of them and kill them. Some of the paint will float off as it is no longer attached. I use Evaporust on automotive stuff, and love it for how well it works to kill rust, but I know what to expect. Some paint is going to come off. There is no way I would start with Evaporust on original paint I wanted to keep.

The product is excellent and have a gallon or two on hand. The project is small I’d use a art brush and apply it just to the rust several times and keep it wet then seal it with as much paint you can save. Cost effective too

I picked up two 1963 Varsitys from the original owners and the paint was dull but looked great. I had them under a cover and one night the wind blew off the cover and it rained. The little bit of rain we got washed away the color coat. Both his and hers are now missing 50% of their paint.

Now you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky? Clint will prove that you're not. 🤣

I think I'll just leave it as is. I like some patina but I thought I'd try to neutralize the rust but I'm not willing to risk losing paint.
Thanks.

Rain washed off bicycle paint? That is odd isn't it? Maybe acid rain? Anyone remember that?

I’d still coat it with something to stop the speed of the rust
