How long was the Z model produced? Did it just become the Spitfire? Interesting memo. It reads as though this Z model is not even a Schwinn.

It was just Schwinn's leader priced "door opener". They produced "a promotional model" for many years. When the Middleweight age came along it was called a Tornado, when the Lightweight age came, it was called the Sportabout/Runabout(tourist) and painted in a pukey light Canary Yellow.

The low price was obtained by cutting both the factory and the dealer margins.

It reads like a jobber's announcement. As far as the prewar serial number goes, the "other guy" has this bike as a 1941 with E53500-H99999 as Schwinn serial numbers for 1941. Plus the tubular bottom bracket has butt flashed welded stays and tubes. I just wonder how many straight down tubes we are likely to see in 1941 or maybe even '40 for that matter?

The fun part is the Ashtabula fork and the flying truss rods, with no indents in the front fender. New Age and El Cheapo, right? But then you look at the tank hanger straps and that's very early technology. And how about that #25 Swan Deluxe stem straight out of the 1948 dogalog.

Cool bike! Where's Leon when you need him.
