As far as 36 holes go, I just copy a wheel I have hanging around. Real simple, just be sure to "ring" the spokes and get roughly the same tone all the way around. My first wheel collapsed bc I had one bunch way too tight, trying to fix an out of round prob. That was in 1978 or so.

well i learned how to spoke a wheel today by a friend of mine that used to work for schwinn back in the 50's, he showed me how to true them and spoke them. so now all I have to do is practice on all the wheels i have and i'll have it down pretty good.
Go to 'Youtube' then go to Park Tool and look at their videos on truing a wheel. Calvin is real good and this way you won't have to write it down and it will be there if you get stuck.

One way to find ERD.

Up hole and down hole drilling to the right of the valve stem. I’m using the same hubs in both examples

Twist the hub, direction depends on where the up hole is.

I count hub spoke holes on the next side. I look at a spoked wheel to determine how many holes to skip from the first spoke inserted for the first spoke on the second side. I have a list of how many to skip, depending on weather the first hole to the right and left of the spoke hole is up or down. I put tape on this spoke as this is where most screw ups start. It’s easy to take this side apart and start on the second side again. 90% of errors are misplacing the first spoke on the second hub side.

Somehow the photos aren’t in order. This site is a little clunky.
