Schwinn changed from the smaller Union hub to the high flange ACS hub mid year in 1979 on the Spitfire.

That is correct. And I am of the opinion it was done as they transitioned over to the Cruiser models that were built in late 79 for the 1980 model year.

Considering that I just sold one, I know I didn't need this...but it's an earlier bike and will clean up to be much nicer than the last.

Badge stamped 0957, April 4th 1977. The guy I got it from had it for about 8 years and put the seat grips and tires on it. Somewhere along the way, it got a set of fenders with Schwinn braces not Wald, and a set of Wald tourist bars. Everything else seems to be there except for the seat clamp reflector...and I can't tell if the brass washers are on the front hub yet.

Crank is stamped, designating heat treatment.

Did a quick adjustment and lube of the squeaky stem threads, did a very quick dust off, changed the bars, seat, and grips. This one is ready for fun!

...just in time for the sun to go down and get a bite to eat.

I'll be on the lookout for a set of 76 or 77 bars if anyone has a set...??

Are those factory fenders? They look like they actually fit!

The braces are Schwinn, so I think the fenders are also. The rear wheel is too far back in the dropout, and the person that installed the fenders made those 1975 fenders work.
Since there aren't many washer marks on the drop outs, I'd say this one hasn't moved much since first assembled. Somebody must have wanted to go fast from the showroom floor with that smaller rear sprocket.
