Isn't it odd that there is no mention of a Kingsize Hevi Duty Schwinn bicycle in the 1965 Schwinn Dealer Catalog, or the 1965 customer handout catalog? Or '66? or '67, or '68 or '69?

65

I think 66 and 67 were on the same page as the Cycletrucks. Work bikes.

You guys are all absolutely correct. I stayed up last night until I crashed but I finally found it. There was no such thing as a 1964 Schwinn Heavy Duti. However, the 1914 frame is the same frame that was used on the 1964 A13 Kingsize American from the years before. What's really neat is that the 1965 M14 Heavy Duti is shown in an enhanced photograph with the shorter head tube in the 1965 dealer catalog but called out in the specs with the 1914 frame. It was also fitted with the 5849 chainguard, a throughback to earlier times. Now, the really neat part for me is that the 1966 is a completely different model. It is now the M15 and is equipped with the 1920 frame and the 5819 chainguard.
For the next 4 years at least, the bike does not offer the Kingsize version and comes equipped only with the 1920 frame.

I have two questions;

1. Does anybody own a mid year serial number confirmed 1965 Heavy Duti with the 1920 frame?

2. Is it possible that the 1965 Kingsize Heavy Duti was the the result of the need to use up all of the unused Kingsize American frames from 1964? And, if so, is the 1965 Kingsize Heavy Duti a VERY RARE BIKE?

I have a 65 KSHD (X4****** 64 serial number) October 64 Halloween stamped. That frame like others here is different as it has additional brazing on the canti bars, reinforced HD.

65 was the first year for a letter for the year. So if you look at the chart there are actually XA stamped SNs.

Thanks! Have you ever seen a 1965 Heavy Duti that was not a KS? Preferably a mid-year serial number.

I can't say I have but this should get things going.

Alienbaby17 KSHD has an LA SN. Thats a Nov 11 stamping. When did the next years bikes start hitting the sales floor? November?? Bikes seemed to averaged being built about two months later. Well Thanksgiving was a 4 day holiday, Christmas they shut down for 2 - 3 weeks. November build would probably be a 66 bike and this bike probably wasn't built till January or February 66.

You mentioned using up old frames, there are a few of us that have 64 built 62 frames. My best guess on this was since these weren't made year round but in batches Schwinn built some extra frames the first year for sale/warranty claims. 64 came along, they weren't selling so it was just build them up and blow them out. But thats just my thinking.

So, the '64 KSA and the '65 KSHD are the same bike except for the seat post decal and the chainguard screening. Such an easy transition and an easy way to clean out the old frames. I hope somebody posts a 1965 non-KSHD with a mid year serial number.

Another SUPER cool factoid is that 1966 Fair Trade price page effective January 3, 1966 lists the '66 Model M15-6 as "Heavy Duti (Kingize) - Coaster"..........BUT, the 1966 Fair Trade price page effective June 1, 1996 lists the '66 Model M15-6 as "Heavy Duti - Coaster, thus discontinuing the Kingsize edition. (I have originals of the 1965 and 1966 Fair Trade Price pages)

Also, and maybe even more importantly, the 1966 Schwinn Dealer Catalog photograph of the 1966 Heavy Duti shows it with the standard sized head tube and calls out the 1920 frame in the specs and that catalog was delivered in January.

The HD frames are different. They have additional brazing on the cantilever bars. A few of us have posted pictures of this in other threads.

So you have documentation of possible 66 king size bikes?
Post it up, we might have two on the list now.
