Being in central Arizona, I'd say that's a fairy tale. One factor that made WW's scarce was the Korean war.

The Phantom and Panther were Schwinn's high end models so they were usually equipped (spec'd) with WW's.

Korean chrome ballooner parts just shot up in value do to everyone looking at their 52-53’s and seeing those non-compliant shiny wheels
