Gimletbikes

Finally riding a big boys bike
Hello! My friend and I ran across a free 10-speed AMF Paceline. We grabbed it from a pile of trash on the curb. Despite it being worthless, we both thought it was pretty cool and worth at least cleaning up to ride. it only seems to need new tires tubes and brake pads. I'm interested in trying to pin down its model year, if any of you can help. I know the BMA/6 decal should mean that it's newer than '73. Any other things you can pick out that might narrow down the year? It has 27" x 1-1/4 rims.

Serial #T477874

Thanks!

Hello ...

Our records indicate 1973...

You know, @juvela when I saw that little fish I thought of you. A couple years back you helped me identify a bike and pointed out that fish. I appreciate your help - Thanks!

I feel that this bike is far from worthless and once it is cleaned up and serviced, it should be a lot of fun to ride. I think the low gear skip tooth cog on the freewheel is unique and it reminds me of the freewheel on my '74 Schwinn Sports Tourer.

To each their own, but those 70's AMFs have to have the worst ride quality of any bike I've ever ridden. Get a decent seat on there and it may be tolerable. I'm all for getting old stuff back on the road, even cheap stuff, but man those are awful bikes to ride.

Most of the random British 3-speeds are every bit as "worthless", yet they're actually pleasant riding bikes.

OK, That's fair, and kind of makes sense considering how the ends of the tubes are just crushed onto the dropouts and pinch welded. I'll bet it's not very compliant with bumps. I haven't actually ridden the thing yet, but I'll bet you're right. New brake shoes came in the mail yesterday, so when I get them on there, I'll take it around the block and report back. My expectations are not very high, but I am kind of stoked to find a bike tall enough for me.

Should help, too, when I get tires on it ;)

Yessir, that caught my eye as well. No matter the quality of the ride, I still find the bike quite good looking. I even like the odd greenish gold.
