Wow!
What a spectacular day of racing, in the high mountains!
The race course crossed over the Alpine border between Italy and France, and rode through some of the most stunning scenery on Earth.
I’m sure, the riders couldn’t even tell you what it looked like, because all they were looking at, was their handlebars and the guys jersey that was just up the road.
And what a fantastic road it was!
Kudos to both the Italians and the French authorities for making sure the racing conditions would be perfect for this years race.
A little melting snow on the decent, made things a bit sketchy, but the surface of the road, couldn’t have been any smoother.
Outstanding job by all involved!

Here are the overall standings, with the additional time bonuses added.

So far, this is really shaping up to be a dog fight all the way to the end.
Tadej won the day today, but he’s definitely got some tough competition from the other guys on the leader board.
This years race finishes in Nice, with an individual time trial, which just so happens to be the Belgian superstar, Remco Evenepoel's forte, as he is the current reigning champion in that discipline.
Everybody is going to need as much of a time advantage on that guy as they can get.
The next two days will be for the sprinters, and then we’ll have the first of the two time trials on Friday.
I personally would’ve made this first one a team time trial, and then the individual for the finale.
But, for some odd reason, the organizers don’t seem to like the team time trial.🤨
Come on guys!

A good look at the riders strengths at this point in time....Just look at the top 6 finishers today. UAE climbers go full blast for Pogacar, then Ayuso and Almeida, Pogacars' two top domestics, get 4th and 8th only a minute or so back after pulling for so long. Evenepoel gets 2nd and he looks really good, Roglic as well...where was Tom Pidcock? I guess 2-3 hr mtb races are not the same but totally different. Wow just wow, these top 6-7 finishers today are so fast up and down. Jonas Vingo was only 8 seconds back of Tadej at the top of the Galib climb banner with nobody else there, then in the next 4 minutes of descending Pogacar was 50 seconds up! This guy was hammering in the drops, slamming the brakes on at the last second before each corner. Vingo was not hammering into every corner till the very last second like Pogacar, but instead he seemed to be coasting more into each corner, then he got caught. Then this small elite group took back another 15 seconds to Pogacar. That was interesting to watch...Jonas missed Sep Kuss, but Sep is not a fast descender so what good what it have done? Love the tour.

Yeah, I agree!
Super interesting to see how the top guys are responding to the course so far.
Evenepoel doesn’t seem to be as explosive on the climbs as Pogacar and Vingegaard, but he’s been amazing when it comes to time trialing his way back, once he hits the flats and descents.
Primoz Roglic is quietly getting the job done as well, so right now, it still seems like any one of those four guys can win this thing.
This is exactly the match up I’ve been hoping for ever since Evenepoel came to form, after his near death experience in the Tour of Lombardy a few years ago.
This is the best crop of riders we’ve seen in years.

Thanks again Marty for keeping us up to date on the Greatest Spectacle on Earth! Great race so far! I'm glad everyone has started to chill a bit at the start of stage races. Seems there has been a bit of overzealousness to win the race on the first 3 days lately & bad things happen. Good to see folks remember it doesn't matter where you start but where you finish. 3 weeks is a loooong time for a race.

"This is the best crop of riders we’ve seen in years."

You're so right Marty! The start of this year's tour has been the most interesting and entertaining for quite some time… Thank you again for the play-by-play and commentary.

Well, after that brute of a day on Stage 4, Today’s Stage 5 seemed more like a club ride through the park that is, the Savoie region of France.

But, once push came to shove, and it was time to get down to business, it was indeed the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish that fired off a long shot, that landed with pin point accuracy.

They always say, that records are meant to be broken, but I think it’s pretty safe to say, that 35 Tour de France stage wins is not likely to be broken anytime soon, unless your name happens to be Mark Cavendish.
Way to go, Sir Mark!
