Good Gawd! 😭 I always mention to newbies wanting to paint their frames that it takes some practice. And the ones that want to use a candy paint I tell them to practice and more practice painting some old frames or some beaters for the neighborhood kids. Everyone can paint happy little trees, but painting a bike frame does take a lot practice to do it right and not have the paint 1/4" thick. I was 14 when I shot my first frame with candy paint. It's easier said than done, but that paint job is totally ridiculous!
Agree 100% - practice on a hula hoop or a shovel handle or any kind of pipe - get it right before you tackle your fully prepped bicycle frame - ESPECIALLY with candies or base / clear....practice makes perfect!

A bike frame especially one like this takes a lot more practice than shooting paint on a shovel handle. Lots of moving around and lots of angles need to be covered. It's really a shame that one needs to be completely reshot. 😭

Yep, if the guy has easy access to having it stripped (glass bead or sand blasting) to start over that'd be best but otherwise get scuffing and do the base / clear over again. Painting a bike frame is not rocket science, but it definitely takes practice. The shovel handle idea is the "basics" of painting a tube. Any type of round surface that is a tube is tricky to paint with a fan - as you well know from your posts about painting. One big problem with doing things over again is the cost of time and materials - also as you well know. We no longer live in the days of the $8 quart of lacquer. I've had to paint many things over again - but that was 40 years ago.

The same guy is doing the rack and sheet metal piece ontop of the tank. If this doesnt come back perfect then I may be learning how to paint for real. Like I mentioned before, my time on this project is free as I squeeze it in between (one too many 🤦😁) resto projects. Paying to have it powder coated will bring this over budget for the woman. But I have plenty of elbow grease left in me and some strings I can pull around town. It'll get done.

On the topic of paint, I randomly found this on Mercari for $9. Its a GM Duplicolor touch up paint pen in Bright Aqua Metallic. Might help in drawing the turquoise pinstriping on the chainguard and happens to be the color we chose to use on the bike.

Reassembly has commenced! Don't mind the grease on the Chrome in the pictures, how messy when I eat and I'm messy when pack bearings apparently 🤷. The paint job is virtually a different color now that it's late on properly thick. There's still a couple iffy spots I may need to wet sand in polish with a heavy cut, but overall, I would say it's in presentable condition for someone to use on a daily basis. I also bought a spray can of the Dupli-Color Bright Aqua Metallic to use as a touch up paint. I still swear it comes out so much more blue in the pictures, but regardless, that metallic really stands out now that the pain is on thick. Quite a good color.

And for the eagle eyes out there, those are Spaceliner handlebars. They have a very slight difference in the angle of the bars by the grips that I find much more comfortable.

That is a nice looking color. Did you end up doing the painting?

In case you don't already know, Duplicolor Perfect Match is a lacquer base paint and it is not compatible with enamel paint unless the enamel is really old. The solvents will wrinkle that new paint at the very least.

Well that shows you how much I know about paint lol. Too many summers painting houses with my dad growing up. My brain completely deletes any knowledge of paint

Got a little bit done today. Polished the wheels today for a while. Might be able to do a some more with them. The fenders, at least the rear for sure, are not worthy of re-use. So im searching for affordable 26" fenders with excellent chrome.

Also, whats your thoughts on the color difference between the pedals and the frame? I guess there isnt much I can do about it now. Never thought about the color of the pedals until now.
