I spoke with my dad about the bike over the weekend. It would have been bought in 1938 or 1939. She came home (Greenwood, MS) from college and worked for a few years until marriage. The bike was her transportation to work for those years.

John,
Your Grandmothers bike was built in 1942, sometime after the government's restrictions on bicycle manufacturing was implemented. @Miq started a thread here on these war time Schwinns in 2019 and loads of information has surfaced since then. Take a moment to look it over, and a current list of these bikes is recorded on page 88. @Miq doesn't have yours on the list yet.

Here's the thread.

1942 doesn't make sense with the time line of events as I am being told. I'm sure some of the story is not being remembered correctly or there was another bike she had for a few years before this one. I am assuming your confidence in the year comes from the serial number and lack of chrome parts?

Yes, the serial number and the way the bike was built puts right at that time in 1942. No chrome other than the crank and stem. Painted rims, handlebars, black out hubs, fender braces and chain ring, single rear fender brace, no chain guard or factory supplied stand.

I have decided to part this bike out. Please see DOND for what is available. I am not planning on listing the frame, but would sell for the right price. Everything else is either sold or posted on DOND.

I want to thank the members that have reached out and shared information about this bike with me. This is a great community and the kind of people that make me think maybe this world ain't all bad!
