1970 Star Pilot 3 speed

found this in someone's trash. Gor her road worthy now im slowly restoring it back to its former glory. All it needed was a shifter cable replacement. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated in the restoration. I am only 34 so 1970 was before my time. But things built back then seem to have actually been built right. This bike pedals faster than ebikes go literally haha

I am not sure how you dated this, but this was made by AMF Roadmaster, the same AMF that also made bowling equipment. They were decent bikes but awfully cheap. Compared to a Schwinn, Huffy, Columbia, or an English road bike of the time, they wore out pretty fast. Good thing is that many critical parts were shared among other manufacturers, like that shifter cable and hub. However, compared to the garbage today at big box stores, they have held pretty well. All these old bikes have.

Anyway, AMF serial numbers are VERY hard to decode, nobody has cracked them yet. I can tell you that bike is actually made between 1971-78ish. The give away is that government-mandated safety tag that reads “BMA/6”.

Here’s a ‘76 AMF Scorcher 10-Speed that I restored and sold. It sold locally for $150, it was a looker! If I recall, the seat was date coded and that is how I knew the year. Your front or rear hub may also have a date code.

Okay, this was a fix n' flip bike I got two years ago. It was a 1976 AMF Scorcher roadbike. I liked the color, and thought it would look nice all polished up. I found it in a barn, and bundled with a set of antique Ford wheel covers. I made money on the wheel covers, but the bike sat just as I got it. I started on it sometime last year, and worked on it here and there, as time allowed. This obviously was NOT a priority. I will sell it, and break even on the parts.

So, while not a financially fulfilling restoration, it is an emotionally fulfilling one. Especially when I look at the old pic...

I looked it up by the hub serial number. Its a Shimano 333 hub. If it was newer than June of 1970 it would have been dated that way, or at least thars what I've read on thier webpage. But idk much. Its from before my time.
