Brake Cable Routing?

Nice clear open sections for riding on the flats. I like that! It seems that Schwinn ran the cables in front of the bars on the varsity and continental. All the higher end bikes had the cables behind the bars.

I would think that was because the Varsity/Continentals (being lower end bikes) had relatively short reach stems. The higher end bikes had stems lengths that were frame size appropriate.

They had two sizes, a long and a short stem that were frame size appropriate. And as usual things changed from year to year
 
I rode a little cross back in the day, back then relearned myself early to brake the rear with left hand, still ride down tube shifters so downshifting while braking the rear is somewhat normal,
btw: I only shift with my right hand, thumb crosses over to shift the front derailleur……
having said that I saw Roger DeVlaemink win the cyclocross worlds in 75 with a single front chainring and a down tube shifter for the rear…..
