My guess is that original is referring to the dealer, but not the factory. As @GTs58 and I both mentioned above.

I should mention that I am by no means an expert on Schwinn history. I just happen to have a ‘41 DX Special Equipped from the factory and am sharing what little I have learned about the topic. Learning the history though as you are yourself is half of the fun.
